So uni's over for the semester and again because I am enrolled in one of the few courses in all Australia that doesn't have exams, I am bored shitless. Everyone else has exams. Everyone is studying. Gah.
So I've taken to trying to watch anything with a decent and coherent plot line. So far this constitutes Once Upon A Time and Madmen. Yes those are the only tv shows at the moment that have coherent plot lines. I shit you not.
Studying creative writing makes it very hard to watch tv, because you realise how shit it really is. Most of these shows lack all types of creative talent, have terrible cliché dialogue, very poor plot lines and cliché story. I don't even specialise in script-writing. I haven't touched anything with script since 2010 and that was because I had too for a subject. But even I know what's on tv is poorly constructed and written. Movies are just as bad, however there always seems to be one a year that makes up for how terrible all the rest were.
Take Prometheus for example, I went into that movie expecting something a little different (I didn't realise it was the prologue to the Alien series. If I did I wouldn't have had any expectations), but it always boils down to the same clichéd laziness.
The aliens want to kill us. That is so boring and has been done a million times. The aliens were represented as heartless, imperialistic monsters. Just like every alien is portrayed in movies. I'm not one for the 'oh the aliens warned us/enlightened us about our wicked ways' either. That's just as overdone.
So I was thinking, how could one break the alien-genre cliché in cinema. After about five minutes of analysing the genre and thinking of writing techniques (honestly, five minutes. I'm not a script-writer and I worked out an answer. Why can't people who are meant to be the best in the craft working out these answers? - Laziness). I thought well the aliens can still kill us, however they are not malicious. There's some biological reason that humans and the aliens cannot coexist. That's why they leave us the hell alone. So humans find aliens, start dying, even try find ways to bridge this problem. Return to earth stating they found nothing. It's not a perfect plot, I'm not a script-writer, but at least that's an original plot. I'm sure some screen-writer could take that idea work with it and make it work for a film structure with climaxes in the right place, character motivations - all that jazz. No one does though.
They write clichés that sell. That is laziness.
Yes, rant over. I promise.
Another thing I wanted to address here to my imaginary audience is why I never post here anymore. Frankly it's because of copyright and publishing laws. Anywhere you post something online, your intellectual property becomes that of the site. Even here on deviatnart where you can click that little I retain all my rights button. That still doesn't work because no the corporation Deviantart doesn't own your work, the person who owns deviantart does.
See what I mean? We did a whole few lectures on intellectual copyright laws in an editing course last semester. I want my works to remain mine unless I choose to give the rights to a certain publication. Usually journals and magazines only take 'first publishing rights' which means you are free to publish in other locations as long as that publication takes previously published works.
Just a little warning to my imaginary audience.
And just for the record: I cannot be fucked editing a online rant.
Enjoy the poor grammar and typos
